Greenwave 2010 experiment looking for Mayo schools to participate

Mayo schools have been invited to take part in this year’s Greenwave project after 10 local schools took part in the project last year. The participating schools in 2009 included Quay National School, Quignamanger; Creggs Road, Ballina; Scoil Náisiúnta Naomh Brid, Ballycastle; Holy Family National School, Glenhest Road, Newport; Corclough National School, Corchloch Beal An Mhuirthid; Scoil Náisiúnta Naomh Feichin, An Crois, Claremorris; St Joseph's National School, Greenpark Road, Killala; Newtownwhite National School, Ballysokeery, Ballina; Cloonlyon National School, Charlestown; Killocraun National School, Castle Hill, Ballina; and Scoil Náisiúnta Chluain Luifin, Ballinrobe.

Race Around Ireland 2010, widely recognised as Europe’s toughest endurance cycling race, is now calling for solo and team entrants for this adventure of a lifetime.

Mizen to Malin head by bike in less than twenty hours

A total of 370 miles or 590km separates Ireland’s most southerly and northerly points and this June a group of supremely fit Irish cyclists intend to cycle that distance in less than 20 hours to raise money for Castlebar charity, Rock Rose House Cancer Care. The challenge is not one for the faint hearted as it will mean the cyclists will have to average 18.5mph or 29.5kph hour cumulative including all stops. Starting at 5pm and all going well finishing at 1pm the following day. Organised by Padraig Marrey of Marrey Training Systems in conjunction with Western Lakes Cycling club and members of eight other clubs around the country the group is expected to be made up of almost 25 of Ireland’s most determined and motivated amateur cyclists.

On the evening that France and Britain declared war on Germany, September 3 1939, the 13,500-ton liner SS Athenia, chartered by the Cunard Line, and bound for Montreal with 1,418 passengers and crew was torpedoed, without warning, 250 miles northwest of Malin Head in the North Atlantic*. The following day the Norwegian vessel, Knute Nelson, was steaming towards Galway with 367 shocked and injured survivors, and asked that the city be prepared to receive them. Other survivors were picked up by British naval vessels and brought elsewhere for treatment, but in total 112 passengers and crew were killed in the attack, 28 of them Americans sailing for home as war was declared in Europe.

This summer a group of cyclists intend to cycle from Mizen to Malin head — a total of 590km, passing through all four provinces and 12 counties— in less than 20 hours, in order to raise money for Castlebar charity, Rock Rose House Cancer Care.

Galway cyclists join 32-county challenge

A group of Galwegians are taking part in a cycle with a a difference. When the 25 riders arrives in Galway next Thursday they will be well on their way to completing a challenge that involves travelling through 32 towns in 32 counties over three days.
